The James Irvine Foundation Board of Directors approves $17.2 million in grants on March 13, 2025

The James Irvine Foundation Board of Directors approved eight grants totaling $17.2 million last week. The Foundation also provided $20.1 million in grants this quarter that did not require board approval.  

The grants primarily support the Foundation’s four initiatives focused on working Californians: Better Careers, Fair Work, Just Prosperity, and Priority Communities. More information about all grants can be found in the Foundation’s database here, and the board-approved grants include:  

Better Careers 

Community Partners  

A three-year grant of $3 million to support the Economic Liberation Project’s efforts to assist low-wage workers to access workforce development and entrepreneurship services and support in Long Beach, through an entity such as ÓRALE. 

Fair Work  

Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund  

A three-year grant of $1.77 million to improve the working conditions for domestic care workers through outreach, leadership development, and policy advocacy, through an entity such as the California Domestic Workers Coalition 

Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE) 

A three-year grant of $2.1 million for general operating support.  

Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE) 

A three-year grant of $2.37 million for general operating support.  

Warehouse Worker Resource Center  

A three-year grant of $2.2 million for general operating support. 

Priority Communities  

University Corporation at Monterey Bay  

A two-year grant of $2 million to address critical and specific workforce shortages for Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMT) and build on efforts to establish Salinas as a model for equitable access to quality AAM (Advanced Air Mobility) and UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) Jobs of the Future, through an entity such as the Monterey Bay Drone, Automation, and Robotics Technology (DART) Initiative 

Additional Grantmaking  

Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund 

A two-year grant of $1.5 million to strengthen the organizational infrastructure and capacity of The James Irvine Foundation’s grantees through the Movement Security and Operations Project.  

Matching/Discretionary  

East Bay Community Foundation  

A $2.26 million grant to support The James Irvine Foundation’s Matching and Discretionary donor-advised fund.
