The James Irvine Foundation Board of Directors approved 29 grants totaling more than $31 million last week. The grants included support for the Foundation’s two initiatives focused on low-income California workers (Better Careers and Fair Work), ongoing support for protecting immigrant rights and postsecondary success, and our culminating initiatives (Arts Engagement and Linked Learning).

Better Careers

Anti-Recidivism Coalition
A two-year grant of $500,000 to expand Anti-Recidivism Coalition’s career and civic engagement opportunities for formerly incarcerated individuals.

Jewish Vocational Service
A three-year, general operating grant of $3 million to support the organization’s Career Pathways strategy.

Los Angeles Brotherhood Crusade
A two-year grant of $500,000 to support LA Brotherhood Crusade’s career training, job placement, and support services for young adults facing barriers to employment.

Taller San Jose Hope Builders
A two-year grant of $500,000 for general operating support. This grant would allow Taller San Jose Hope Builders to increase the number of Opportunity Youth connected to quality jobs, and to grow the number of employer partners who hire from Hope Builders.

Workshop for Warriors
A two-year grant of $500,000 to support Workshop for Warriors’ advanced manufacturing training program and job placement for young veterans in San Diego and Imperial counties.

Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy
A two-year grant of $600,000 for general operating support. This grant will support Central Coast Alliance United for a Sustainable Economy in representing the needs and interests of low-wage workers in the region through policy research, leadership development, organizing, and advocacy.

NEO Philanthropy
A two-year grant of $950,000 to address barriers and improve access to job opportunities for black workers in California, through an entity such as the National Black Worker Center Project.

Warehouse Worker Resource Center
A two-year grant of $400,000 for general operating support. This grant will support the Warehouse Worker Resource Center to address the conditions of workers in the warehouse industry through education, advocacy, and civic engagement.

A two-year grant of $500,000 to develop Young California, a program that trains low-income youth on journalism production, and other media content from and about youth perspectives regarding economic inequality.

Foundation for California Community Colleges
A one-year grant of $500,000 to scale CaliforniaColleges.edu, a college and career planning portal for K-12 students and their families, as well as a two-year grant of $1.65 million to support the implementation of the Chancellor’s strategic Vision for Success.

Monterey Institute of Technology and Education
A three-year grant of $500,000 to support NROC’s expansion of EdReady, a personalized learning platform for math acceleration across the California State University System.

Protecting Immigrant Rights

California Immigrant Policy Center
A two-year grant of $1.025 million to strengthen communications and regional capacity building for the immigrant rights movement.

University of Southern California
A two-year grant of $675,000 to build a data and research hub to support California’s immigrant rights movement.

Voter and Civic Engagement

Communities for a New California Education Fund
A two-year grant of $600,000 for general operating support. This grant will allow Communities for a New California Education Fund to improve their organizational capacity to advocate for families living in rural areas of California.

Community Water Center
A two-year grant of $400,000 for general operating support. This grant supports Community Water Center’s efforts to engage residents from impacted communities in advocating for sustainable, community-driven water solutions.

Inland Congregations United for Change Sponsoring Committee, Inc.
A two-year grant of $450,000 for general operating support. This grant will allow the Inland Congregations United for Change Sponsoring Committee to increase voter turnout in the Inland Valley.

A three-year grant of $2 million to support the Fund for an Inclusive California, which is dedicated to strengthening the capacity of local organizations supporting low-income Californians and communities of color to advance inclusive community-centered development. Public Policy Institute of California
A three-year grant of $2.25 million for general operating support. This grant will support the Public Policy Institute of California and its work to inform and improve public policy in California through independent, objective, nonpartisan research.

Regents of the University of California
A two-year grant of $575,000 for the California Policy Lab. Their effort aims to form a lasting partnership between the state’s government and flagship public universities, specifically to integrate research infrastructure that increases the quantity, quality, effectiveness, and cost-effectiveness of research on California policies.
