Diversifying Nonprofit and Movement Revenue: A Call for Conversation and Action

Worker rights and economic justice leaders in California are delivering historic win for workers—from protections against on-the-job retaliation to “fair work week” ordinances to restitution for stolen wages—yet often do so in an environment where funding is insufficient, uncertain, short-term and restricted. That’s why we supported The LeadersTrust to explore what it might take to expand and deepen the revenue streams nonprofits and movements need.

The report explores how funders, nonprofit capacity builders, and others can support nonprofits to raise more resources from individual donors, memberships, and other independent activities. It highlights major themes and reflections that emerged from the research divided in three parts: 1) how mindsets about fundraising are shifting and need to take root and grow; 2) what organizations need to increase independent revenue; 3) questions to inform a path forward.

Key investments nonprofits need include:

  1. More general operating support
  2. Dedicated funding for resource generation and peer learning
  3. Leadership and professional development for fundraising leaders
