As a grantmaking foundation, we recognize that our financial resources are our primary means to advance our mission. However, we believe that we have the ability and the obligation to combine our grantmaking, when appropriate, with other strategies and approaches to reach our goals.
Irvine can help address the major issues and challenges facing the state by:
- Bringing together individuals and organizations with common interests
- Investing in research and evaluation
- Communicating about our work and the lessons we are learning from it
Example
Our Youth program seeks to transform high school education in California by making Linked Learning available to a majority of low-income youth and across all socioeconomic groups. In addition to grants, Irvine and ConnectEd, a key grantee in the Youth program portfolio, are working to expand the field of Linked Learning through a variety of activities, including organizing state conferences to discuss issues and share best practices; providing technical assistance to participating schools and school districts; and conducting evaluations to assess the impact on student outcomes. Evaluation results will be shared with the educational community so that they can inform ongoing efforts to expand the Linked Learning approach.
